Representing Centro Escolar University Makati, a Fourth Year Marketing Management student from Business Administration Department joined more than a hundred youth leaders from different countries in the 8th University Scholars Leadership Symposium (USLS) held in Bangkok, Thailand last August 1-7, 2017. Jay-ar Ombay of BSBAMM4A took part in the said symposium, which is aimed at developing leaders to bring social change and instilling in them the value of social responsibility and giving back to the community. Some global social issues tackled include education, poverty, overpopulation, and communicable diseases. World-renowned life coaches and motivational speakers which included the Philippines’ Francis Kong were invited in the said seven-day symposium. These speakers have gained international recognition for their various humanitarian works. In his talk, Kong told the participating young leaders that all young scholars have the wisdom and power to make their life worthwhile and become who they want to be. Activities such as planting rice and tree, putting fish in the pond, riding a bike to reduce fuel consumption, making bridges and teaching the locals how to sustain the community were done by the participants in order to achieve the primary aim of the symposium which is to value social responsibility. Travel sessions were also part of the week-long activity where the participants visited different places in Bangkok which need improvement and where implementation of sustainable living of the locals should be developed. Dedicated on changing the lives of communities in need and understanding the world from a different perspective, the participants were challenged to carry out the lessons that they have learned from the week-long symposium.
